- Language learning has a very high abandonment rate. A mere 4% of students embarking on language courses in schools achieve a basic level of fluency after three years. 96% fail to become fluent, and many quit completely!
- People almost always wrongly conclude two things from this:
- Myth 1) Learning languages is hard.
- Myth 2) Other people (but not them) are naturally good at languages.
- One of the biggest reasons cited for abandoning is that students don't feel any sense of progression -- it’s hard to feel like you’re getting BETTER! Also, most students from the US, even that have an “A” in Spanish, can visit a Spanish speaking country and they can't even have basic conversations. People largely give up because they had the wrong expectations.
- So let's bust some myths:
- 1) Learning a language isn't hard. It just takes a long time.
- 2) Everyone is naturally good at languages.
- You already learned one, remember?
- You may have just forgotten how long it took.
- Learning Spanish is like mountain climbing
- It's steeper at first, so learning in middle school takes determination
- But, the Spanish fluency mountain is one ANYONE can climb, provided she is willing to put in the effort and time to keep going a bit at a time!
